communication &
visualization - bus shelter
client: Jönköpings Kommun
duration: 2 weeks
delivery: 2025
brief: develop a set of communication materials that capture and express the full essence of the urban furniture design previously created by Håkan Olsson at Cliff Design.

intention and process
By actively communicating this newly designed bus shelter, we aimed to highlight the value designers bring when collaborating with public institutions like the City of Jönköping, where architects traditionally dominate.

We, as designers go beyond creating visually appealing solutions. We focus on understanding the users’ needs and fostering inclusive, constructive dialogue to ensure all voices and actors of the project are heard and integrated into the final outcome.
From early sketches inspired by insightful conversations with collaborators and users, to visuals highlighting the bus shelter’s key features, we used a range of graphic techniques to communicate our mindset and design process to the audience.

modularity
The main aspect of this bus shelter that we wanted to communicate about was modularity. Because the shelter is built with flexibility and modularity from the ground up, it can adapt to different environments. It’s a huge benefit for the city, as they are able to tailor each configuration of the shelter to answer local needs and optimize material use. It also allows for easy repair or upgrades, supporting sustainability through simple assembly and disassembly.

“Essentially, our intention was to communicate the benefits of working with design and designers to people who are not used to collaborating with us.”

The work of designers is also to communicate to very different types of person. Sometimes, very technical images are required, with emphasis on feasibility and production requirements. Designers adapt their language and communication so that everyone else align and agree. As an example, these 4 technical views of 3D models used for communication to the project partners, then became artworks meant to reflect the precision at hand!

“The result shows the diversity of skills that designers have, including idea generation, visualizing, 3D modeling and generally their ability to communicate with everyone!”
Here is the final animation showing all parts of the bus shelter coming together in an artistic way. It is aiming at conveying a sense of simplicity in how the shelter is actually made, including few parts and relatively simple assembly or dissassembly.
